Watershed Stewards Academy


WSA was growing quickly with over 200 citizens trained as watershed stewards and scores of restoration projects in diverse communities. Early attempts to expand fundraising did not yield enough revenue to keep up with the demand for WSA’s services. Board members and staff recognized they needed help figuring out the right path to growth, consistent with WSA’s values.

The Process

Due East assessed WSA using our 5 Drivers of Growth & Sustainability and dug deep into the organization’s data. The assessment showed key areas of untapped opportunity and became the basis for a new vision, development plan, major gifts program and idea for attracting more donors to local green causes. Due East guided the planning, trained the board on fundraising and coached leaders on the Development Committee to lead a successful $100,000 year-end challenge campaign.

The Results

Through a 4-month challenge campaign led by the WSA board, WSA increased board giving five-fold and quadrupled annual giving. Due East also helped WSA and its partners to plan an inaugural “Green Give” in 2017, raising nearly $210,000 in 24 hours for local environmental causes.
